Great question, it’s basically whole cacao beans grown in artisan ways, handcrafted into a paste with intention. Because it is lightly processed, the cacao’s compounds can make us feel good. Read here for more on this question :)

Ceremonial cacao is not just a sacred drink with deep cultural roots; it's also packed with impressive health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, this superfood contains essential minerals such as magnesium and iron, alongside mood-enhancing compounds. Here's how it can support your health:
Heart Health: Cacao is known for its heart-healthy benefits, primarily due to its high antioxidant content, which can help reduce heart disease risk factors. Source: "Cocoa and Cardiovascular Health," Circulation, American Heart Association.
Cognitive Function: The flavanols found in cacao have been linked to improved cognitive function, including enhanced memory and learning abilities. Source: "Enhancing Human Cognition with Cocoa Flavonoids," Frontiers in Nutrition.
Mood and Well-being: Cacao naturally boosts the production of endorphins and serotonin in the brain, leading to improved mood and a sense of well-being. Source: "Mood Modulation by Food: An Exploration of Affect and Cravings in ‘Chocolate Addicts’," British Journal of Clinical Psychology.
Relaxation and Upliftment: The presence of theobromine in cacao offers a gentle, uplifting effect without the jitters often associated with caffeine, promoting relaxation. Source: "The Psychopharmacology of Theobromine in Humans," Frontiers in Pharmacology.
Obviously, do your own research. All bodies are different and we suggest you seek medical advice if you are unsure about Cacao and your body :) -
The art of making the perfect brew is something dear to our hearts - it’s got to be yummy if we’re going to take the time and effort to make a cacao! Louise is officially the best maker of cacao and Oonagh, who oversees our production, is a chocolatier and so ensures a delicious, raw product. The basic principles are: measure what you need, add to water or plant mylk, let it simmer very shortly so you get the creaminess, and then serve. For our tips on how to make you most delicious cacao, check out our Make Cacao page here.

Ceremonial cacao is widely considered safe for most people, remember, it’s the mother of chocolate, but it's important to be aware of its caffeine and theobromine content, which can be more potent due to lack of processing. These stimulants can affect those who are particularly sensitive, potentially causing restlessness or discomfort. For individuals with specific health concerns or those on medication, it's crucial to seek advice from a medical professional prior to adding ceremonial cacao to their diet. This cautious approach ensures that the consumption of ceremonial cacao complements one's health without unintended effects.

Hey, have them all! We are not about this is bad and that is not, BUT/AND Coffee’s hit can sometimes be too much, too jangly … Cacao’s lift is lighter and gives more of a sustained energy flow (we find). Chocolate, similarly gives you more of a hit, due to the sugar: cacao is a get into the flow vibe, whilst also hitting your craving for chocolate (but not sugar!). All of that said, Jo (co-founder) has found Cacao very beneficial as she suffers from adrenal fatigue and cannot have too much coffee.

YES! Of course, we would love that, and we would invite anyone called to our cacao to really remember that cacao ceremonies are more about humans coming into presence with each other. We have some ways that we like to create what we call ‘Playmonies’ that powerfully and safely make people feel connected and comfortable with cacao. We also love to support people in their somatic and creative spaceholding, and do offer bulk discount for working in events, please email Jo and Louise hello@commonrootscacao.com

No, Ceremonial cacao contains theobromine, a compound known for its gentle psychoactive properties, which can lead to relaxation, a mild sense of euphoria, and heightened sensory experiences. Research indicates that theobromine's effects are significantly subtler compared to classic psychedelics, making ceremonial cacao more esteemed for its capacity to enhance emotional openness and deepen awareness rather than for strong psychoactive effects. Studies suggest that theobromine's influence on mood and cognition underscores ceremonial cacao's role in wellness and spiritual practices, emphasizing its unique, non-intense psychoactive profile.
